Lending/Lekotek Toy Library

Lighthouse Learning Center has a Toy Library. The Library is derived from the Scandinavian concept of Lekotek, meaning, "play at library." The Library's mission is to enhance growth and development for children with special needs through the world of play, and to provide parents with information relating to their child and his/her educational needs.

The library is intended to promote physical, cognitive, speech, and sensory development in children birth to eight years old, and is open to the Orange Park/Jacksonville community. The philosophy surrounding the library is that children learn by playing and exploring their environment, contributing to a healthy self-esteem, and a positive self-image. Lighthouse Learning Center

The mission of the Lending/Lekotek toy Library is to enhance growth and development for all children through the world of play, to foster inclusion of children with any disability into the full range of family and community life, and to provide parents with information relating to their child and his/her educational needs.

The Toy Library has toys for all ages and stages. It consists of developmental toys ranging from stacking and sorting fun to imaginary play and puzzles. It also includes equipment such as adaptable switches, standers, and other positioning equipment.

There is a parent section with books about disorders and disabilities, child development, and parenting topics such as potty training, discipline, and games to play with children.

Brothers and sisters are vital participants in a child's development. In order to increase participation for all children in a family the library has a section of games and toys that interest older children.

The Library has a workroom with a laminator, an Ellison machine, and a book binder for use of its members.

The Lending/Lekotek Library also offers Lekotek Play Sessions. The play session is a family centered play-time with a trained Lekotek Leader who introduces new toys and new ways of playing to children with special needs. Most of all play sessions are about having fun regardless of ability or disability.
