Images of nature, the ocean and butterflies, move slowly over the wall. A disco ball scatters colored light about the dark room. In one corner surrounded by soft cushions there are multi-colored bubbles gurgling in a tube. Rhythmic music plays in the background while a light pulses to its beat. Along the walls are glowing objects asking to be explored. There is a vibrating beanbag, a mirror, a colored fiber-optic light spray, and even a ball pit like McDonald's has. There is a faint scent of strawberries filtering into the room. Welcome to Lighthouse's Snoezelen room.
| With help from AT&T Lighthouse has an entire room dedicated to sensory development. |

Snoezelen is a multi-sensory environment created for individuals with developmental disabilities and sensory impairments. The room is designed to promote learning through play, exploration, and relaxation.
Snoezelen consists of shapes, lighting effects, textures, smells, colors, and music. Pleasurable sensory experiences are generated in an atmosphere of trust and relaxation. In the Snoezelen room, experiences are arranged to stimulate the primary senses without intellectual activity.

The Snoezelen room allows teachers and therapists at Lighthouse to concentrate on developing a trusting relationship with each child. Children who are otherwise perceptually isolated are engaged, their attention is focused, and defensive and self-injurious behaviors decrease. Research indicates that children participating in Snoezelen are more vocal, and that their concentration improves. |
Snoezelen is also a welcome intermission to the Lighthouse staff during their busy work day.
